It's a Boy!

It's a boy! David and I are thrilled to announce the arrival of Michael Anthony.
I've been told that we now have a hockey team (ok, one line) - with John, Michael, cousins Cameron & Jeremy... along with Dad & Uncle Adam!

I'll be taking a shortt maternity leave, returning to the shop this summer. My heartfelt thanks goes out to the general manager Jennifer, Chefs Mark & Emily, and our retail team - Marsha, Stephanie, Debbi and Alicia for managing the shop and taking great care of our customers while I am away.

Selection varies but we have a large selection of brownies, blondies, lemon squares, date squares, and more.

"health salad"

mom's "health salad" with champagne vinaigrette

My Mom is definitely the healthiest eater I know... yet she still manages to make even the healthiest of dishes taste delicious.

She was inspired to create this salad after a visit to Arizona's "True Food Kitchen" restaurant, which is owned by chef Andrew Weil, Oprah's former personal chef. The restaurant's menu is based on simple, fresh, pure ingredients - with a focus on vegetables, whole grains, fish and chicken (just like Mom's kitchen at home!)

This salad is full of bright colours and flavours, and I love the addition of manchego cheese.

ingredients for champagne vinaigrette

  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
  • 2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
  • ¼ c champagne vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 2-3 dashes hot sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • ½ c extra virgin olive oil

method for vinaigrette

  • Pour everything but the olive oil into the bowl of a food processor. Slowly add the olive oil in a steady stream until combined. Pour over salad ingredients - see below.
  • note: you can substitute apple cider vinegar for the champagne vinegar if desired.

ingredients for salad

  • feel free to alter the ingredients based on your tastes and what you have in the fridge (and what looks best at the market!)
  • baby kale
  • romaine lettuce or mixed salad greens
  • sliced radishes
  • broccoli florets
  • chopped carrots
  • diced beets, cooked or raw
  • avocado, diced
  • manchego cheese, small dice
  • grape tomatoes, sliced
  • celery, diced
  • cucumber, sliced
  • optional - top with cooked chicken or fish to make it a meal.

bombay chicken quesadilla's (these are my favourite). Two flour tortilla's are stuffed with a mixture of chopped curried chicken with diced peppers, currants and asiago cheese. Whenever the chefs would make them, myself and the staff would gobble them up before they even had a chance to be sold to our customers...which made me realize that we should really add them to our menu! $10.98 each

mediterranean style mac & cheese
we took our classic 3 cheese macaroni and added goat cheese, pesto and sun-dried tomatoes...delish! $8.98 each

spring onion & bacon mac & cheese
yes...we love mac & cheese around here! We feel that bacon makes everything taste better...and this one has been selling fast. $8.98 each

ready-to-bake cinnamon buns (no raisins)
gooey, buttery cinnamon buns - simply thaw overnight in the fridge and bake for 17-22 minutes, invert on a serving platter and enjoy!
