::: charitable soup sale
for cystinosis

Please join us on Friday, February 24th, 2012 from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. for our winter soup & cracker charitable fundraiser.

As you may know, we feature charitable bake sales or soup sales from time to time, to help out worthy causes.

This soup sale will benefit the Cystinosis Awareness & Research effort (CA&RE), and in particular, a little 4 year old girl named
Gabbie Strauss, from Waterloo, who struggles with the disease.

I attended to the University of Guelph with Gabbie's mother Jody, and when I heard about their challenges as a family, I wanted to help by raising awareness as well as funds.

On February 24th, we'll have a wide variety of soups, crackers and fresh bread available. ALL of the PROFITS from these items sold on this day will to to the CA&RE foundation.
Please consider dropping by the store on Friday, February 24th, 2012 to support this great cause.

::: recipe of the month

lemon & raspberry balsamic yogurt "sundaes"

Many of you know that we added an extra virgin olive oil & balsamic vinegar tasting bar to the shop back in June... we offer more than 40 varieties of olive oil & balsamic, all available for complimentary tastings.

What does January mean to so many of us? DIET season! (in other words, I'll save my decadent chocolate recipe for next month).

Many of us like to start the day with yogurt and fresh fruit. I know that drizzing yogurt with olive oil & balsamic vinegar may sound very strange... but please trust me! It's amazing (because the balsamic vinegar is aged, it's very sweet like syrup). And it only has 10 calories per tablespoon, with only 4 grams of sugar.

This month, are offering a free, take-home sample of our lemon-raspberry drizzle (which is featured in the below recipe) all month long (just mention it when you come in).

If you'd like to purchase a bottle instead, we are offering the 200 mL bottle of our raspberry balsamic for $9.98 including tax, for the month of January.

(A great combo for salads, too!)

lemon & raspberry balsamic yogurt "sundaes"

ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons dana shortt gourmet lemon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons dana shortt gourmet raspberry balsamic vinegar
  • 2 cups vanilla yogurt (or your favourite flavour)
  • 1 cup chopped fresh fruit or berries

method

  • Pour olive oil & balsamic into a mason jar and secure with lid. Shake vigorously until emulsified, about 10 seconds.
  • Divide yogurt into 2 shallow bowls. Top with fresh fruit. Drizzle with the lemon- raspberry emulsion (2 tablespoons on each sundae)
  • Note: Great with granola too

Makes 2 "sundaes"

::: yes, we do cater!

In December, we had quite a few customers ask us whether or not we still cater. The answer is a resounding YES!

Back in the fall of 2010, I tweaked the way we offer catering (which I think has lead to some confusion, and why some people thought that we stopped catering altogether).

Here's our catering now works... we prepare all of the food, BUT, we use an outside staffing agency to take care of the staffing (servers, bartenders and so forth), rentals, flowers, etc.

The price of our catering is now considerably lower because it is so much less labour- & time-intensive for us.

Our customers are also now free to prepare some of their own food items and supplement with food from us, OR, they can purchase the entire meal from us.

We can arrange for service (bartenders, servers) if required, or you can simply pick up the food from our shop or we can have it delivered to your home or office. In other words, you do not have to hire a bartender or server if you do not require service.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me at catering@danashortt.ca
