::: two new flavours of scones!

We now offer two new varieties of our best selling ready-to-bake scones:

asiago scallion (my favourite!) - our cheddar herb scones are so popular that I decided to offer a second variety of "savoury" scones - these are delicious with soup or chili or try serving them alongside an omelet or scrambled eggs...

bumbleberry - for this new scone, we combine dried blueberries, raspberries, cherries, currants and cranberries. Delicious with jam and double Devon cream.

Our scones are sold raw, in wheels of 8, ready for you to bake at home.

::: recipe of the month

tina's award winning "blueberry drizzle salad"

Try this amazing salad! Credit goes to my good friend Tina Roberts who is an incredible cook. This salad took top prize for a "Cottage Life" contest a few years back...

I like this salad so much, I've made it twice in the past 2 weeks. On both occasions, the salad received rave reviews - not only does it taste delicious, it looks gorgeous too.

Note: This recipe easily doubles to serve a crowd. I added about a cup of fresh, whole blueberries to the drizzle and tossed this mixture into the salad because I was serving this salad buffet-style to a large group and wanted everything combined in one large bowl.

ingredients:

blueberry syrup:

  • ½ cup wild blueberries
  • 3 tbsp white sugar
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 2 tsp lemon juice

salad:

  • 8 cups mixed greens, washed, dried, and torn into bite-size pieces
  • ½ cup slivered almonds, toasted
  • ¼- 1/3 cup feta cheese, crumbled

dressing:

  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • ¼ tsp white sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp dijon mustard
  • 4 tbsp vegetable oil

method:

  1. combine blueberries, sugar, and water and cook over medium heat until syrupy – about 5 minutes.
  2. cool blueberry mixture and then add 2 teaspoons lemon juice.
  3. combine all dressing ingredients, except the oil, and whisk until salt dissolves. Slowly whisk in the oil.
  4. combine salad ingredients and arrange in a large shallow bowl, toss salad ingredients with dressing.
  5. drizzle blueberry syrup over top of salad.

::: new village kitchen entrées!

We now offer the delicious “village kitchen” entrees and side dishes.

Village Kitchen is a gourmet grocery store and food shop located in Unionville, Ontario. Their side dishes, entrees and desserts were such a hit with their customers that they decided to wholesale their menu items to other fine food shops.

As always, any products that we sell in our store (but don’t make in our kitchen) has to fit with our philosophy of using only the best quality ingredients, and must be free of chemicals, preservatives and fake flavourings (of course, the food has to taste great, too!)

We offer the following menu items (we are continuing to add new entrees and side dishes to the list every month)

  • chicken parmesan (best seller)
  • veal parmesan
  • beef stroganoff (my favourite, I serve it over a bed of rice)
  • beef pot roast (my Dad’s favourite)
  • pork tenderloin in a porcini mushroom sauce
  • stuffed chicken breasts with a Dijon cream sauce
  • low calorie chicken cacciatore
  • low calorie chicken and spinach lasagna
  • scalloped potatoes

::: we're selling filled cupcakes!

If you've been into the store recently, it's likely that you've noticed our new cooler filled with mouth-watering cupcakes!

We try to have 6 different varieties on hand at all times, but it has been rather difficult as they sell so quickly!

See below for a description of some of the most popular flavours:

choco loco - chocolate cake with chocolate cream pudding filling and chocolate icing

french connection - vanilla cake with vanilla cream pudding filling and vanilla icing

love monkey - banana cake with peanut butter filling and peanut butter frosting

key lime dream - french vanilla cake with key lime cream filling and vanilla icing

pina colada - pineapple-coconut cake with pineapple-coconut cream filling and vanilla icing (this one is my fav!)

cherry cheesecake - cherry-vanilla cake with cherry cheese filling and vanilla icing

lemon drop - lemon cake with lemon chiffon cream filling and vanilla icing

strawberry shorttcake - vanilla cake with strawberry filling and vanilla icing

We are participating in a fabulous event called "exercise and accessorize" this September.

While there, try out the newest in fitness class, Zumba, at Columbia Lake Health Club. Sample nutrition products, browse great fitness wear and fall fashion, learn about living a healthy active lifestyle. All this and more is open to the public. Expect samples and fun galore.

TechTown is located on 340 Hagey Blvd. in Waterloo (just off of Columbia Street West).

::: what's in season?

tomatoes!

Finally, tomatoes that taste like tomatoes (not mealy cardboard) are available.

Wonderful tomatoes can be found at "The Old Kitchen Cupboard Organic Foods" in Belmont Village. They're sweet, juicy and full of flavour.

Last night, I made bacon and tomato sandwiches for supper - simple but delicious - and an easy way to make my husband, David, very happy (he ate five!).

I picked up the bacon from Stemmler's beautiful new store in Heidelburg. Their thickly-sliced, tasty bacon is definitely my favourite!

::: home made pies

Did you know that we sell home made, 9 " fruit pies?

Varieties depend on the season. Currently, we offer blueberry, apple and peach.
